This
project grew out of work undertaken by Dr.
Timothy Barker during his time as a Postdoctoral
Research Fellow at the United Nations University –
Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS).
Tim was a member of the Education for Sustainable Development
(EfSD)
team under the leadership of Katsunori Suzuki and Zinaida
Fadeeva. The work included the development of Regional Centres
of Expertise (RCEs)
for EfSD. Tim also completed his own research on “Contextualisation
of Virtual Learning in the Global Marketplace”,
a follow-up to his PhD work.
Aside
from working in the EfSD team and working on his own theses
Tim also participated in the wider intellectual life in Japan.
He had the honour of being a rapporteur at the Tokyo Ubiquitous
Network Conference (part of a preliminary meeting for the
World Summit
on the Information Society). At this time Tim met Kuzvinetsa
Peter Dzvimbo, the Rector of the African
Virtual University, who was keen for people to realise
the true picture of the state of development in Africa.
Upon
returning to the UK Tim found employment as an Educational
Researcher in the newly formed Physics
Innovation Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
(piCETL) under the leadership of Dr. Derek Raine. From
the outset Dr. Raine was keen to broaden the appeal of a traditional
Physics course by aligning it with “the sustainable
development agenda”. Around this time Tim also met again
(having already met in Japan) with Andy Johnston: Head of
Education and Learning at Forum
for the Future, a key Sustainability Non Governmental
Organisation.
